The ancient world
Abraham left two cities that were both centres of moon-god worship.
Ur in southern Mesopotamia and Haran in the north were both major cult centres of the moon god, known as Nanna or Sin. Joshua later reminded Israel that Terah, Abraham's father, “served other gods,” and Abraham 1 describes those gods demanding human sacrifice. When God called Abram out, He was calling him away from the religion of both places he had ever lived.
