The ancient world
The plagues were aimed at Egypt's gods — Exodus says so outright.
Before the last plague the Lord says, “against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment.” The Nile was revered as a source of life; a frog-headed goddess was associated with birth; the sun god was among the greatest of all. The river turns to blood, frogs overrun the land, and the sun goes dark for three days. Each plague shows who actually rules what Egypt worshipped.
