The ancient world
Genesis 1 never uses the words “sun” or “moon.”
It calls them “the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night.” In the world around Israel the sun and moon were gods, and their ordinary names were also divine names. Genesis gives them a job description instead of a name: lamps, hung in place, doing what they are told. Read against its neighbors, the chapter is quietly dethroning the gods everyone else worshipped.
