In the original
Joseph's famous coat may not have been colourful at all.
כְּתֹנֶת פַּסִּיםkətōnet passîma robe of … (meaning uncertain)
The phrase appears only twice in the Bible. The Greek translators guessed “many-coloured,” and the King James followed them. Many scholars now think passîm refers to length — a robe reaching to the palms and soles, with long sleeves, the clothing of someone who does not do manual work. The only other person to wear one is Tamar, David's daughter, “for with such robes were the king's daughters … apparelled.”
