John's Gospel makes light the master image of the prologue and the ministry: the light shines in darkness, the true light that lights every person coming into the world (John 1:5, 9). The last clause is decisive for Latter-day Saints — every person, not only the covenant few.

Moroni 7:16 states the doctrine plainly: "the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil." D&C 88:6–13 extends it to physics as well as ethics, describing the light of Christ as the power by which the sun and the stars were made and "the law by which all things are governed."
