light
H216noun, masculine
Semantic range
- 1daylight; the light of the luminaries
- 2life, prosperity, favour
- 3instruction and truth
The first thing spoken into being (Genesis 1:3) — and notably three days before the sun. Ancient and modern readers alike have noticed; Latter-day Saint scripture supplies a category that fits, describing a light "which proceedeth forth from the presence of God to fill the immensity of space," the light "which giveth life to all things" (D&C 88:12–13).
That doctrine of the Light of Christ (Moroni 7:16–19; John 1:9; D&C 93:2) treats light as more than an image: it is the medium of divine influence, the moral sense given to every person, and the substance of glory itself.
In the King James Version
light
day
bright
