A rare compound — theos plus pneō, to breathe — appearing once in the New Testament, at 2 Timothy 3:16: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God." The image is of breath, the same picture as rûaḥ and pneuma.

The eighth Article of Faith adds a qualification that most creeds do not: "We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly." The Restoration therefore holds a high view of inspiration together with a candid view of transmission — a combination that makes the Joseph Smith Translation, the Book of Mormon's claims about "plain and precious" things lost (1 Nephi 13:26–29), and continuing revelation coherent rather than contradictory.
