Hypo (under) plus menō (to remain): to stay put under pressure rather than to escape it. English "patience" (KJV's usual rendering) has drifted toward waiting quietly; the Greek is closer to load-bearing.

Romans 5:3–4 makes it the hinge of a chain — tribulation works endurance, endurance works proven character, character works hope. The Latter-day Saint phrase "endure to the end" (2 Nephi 31:20; D&C 14:7) is this word, and it is the last step of the doctrine of Christ for a reason: the covenant path is walked, not merely entered.
