The epi- prefix intensifies: not merely knowing about but knowing thoroughly, by encounter. Ephesians 4:13 sets it as the destination of Church life — until we all come "unto the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man."

This is the register in which Latter-day Saints speak of gaining a testimony: not assent to information but knowledge by acquaintance, obtained through the Holy Ghost (Moroni 10:4–5; John 7:17 — "if any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine").
