Semantic range

Classical eirēnē is largely negative — the interval between wars. Under the pressure of translating šālôm it grows into something positive: wholeness, well-being, right relationship.

Both senses are present in John 14:27, where the peace Christ gives is explicitly "not as the world giveth," and in D&C 121:7–8 and 19:23, where peace is promised inside continuing trouble rather than after it. The Book of Mormon's most striking instance is 3 Nephi 17, where the peace comes not from the absence of pain but from the presence of the Savior.
